This weekend’s IndyCar race might lead to another surprise performance. The Verizon IndyCar Series lands in Iowa on Sunday for the Iowa Corn 300, which last year was the race in which Josef Newgarden announced that he was taking things up to 11. So who’s next?
Everyone remembers the story from last year: Newgarden earned his first win of 2016 in a very dominating fashion, leading the most laps at Iowa Speedway — more than 280 of them — while driving with the aftereffects of a hand injury. (He discussed it with FanSided here.)
There’s no reason he can’t repeat, minus the broken hand, in 2017. After all, he did just come a very close second at Road America. Newgarden has run fast all year long and he’s already won once this year. Is this where he gets his second victory under the Team Penske banner? It’s a real possibility.
Or maybe the 2017 Iowa Corn 300 will be the event where someone else emerges with another phenomenal performance. The Verizon IndyCar Series paddock is deep enough that anyone could surprise in the land of corn. As long as someone remembers to find Newgarden and Simon Pagenaud before the race, we should have a real barnburner on our hands. And the best way to enjoy it is to watch IndyCar live.
